Berlin Berlin (1)

After Italy we pass now to another European country. To Germany! And firstly we will know about Berlin, the capital city.

Brandenburg Gate

Berlin was once a city that carried the characteristics of both East and West Europe. But since the fall of the Berlin Wall it is hard to see that difference anymore and Berlin has changed a lot. Ok, ok I will not tell you here the history but we will learn about the city step by step... But I should admit that it is full of history.

Brandenburg Gate

The historical Brandenburg Gate (Das Brandenburger Tor) is the symbol of Berlin and also of Germany. I am sure whenever you open a page about Germany, the first picture you will see will be it. It dates till 1791. Especially the statue - the Quadriga- atop of the Gate is famous. It is a chariot drawn by four horses. The quadriga is the chariot of the gods and it symbolizes triumph.

Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church

Or with the famous German name "Kaiser Wilhelm Gedaechtniskirche"... It is located in Berlin on the Kurfürstendamm. It was built in 1890 but in a bombing raid in 1943 during the World War II it was damaged badly. And you can still see the traces of that bombing on the church. But it is not used anymore as a church. It was turned into a memorial hall. The church services are practiced in a separate chapel near it which was built in 1963.

Bundestag

The German parliament is called Bundestag and it is one of the main attractions in Berlin. Most of the time you can see very long queues in front of it.

And normally there are also strict security checks and it takes time as well.

And the most exciting part is the glass dome on the top of the Bundestag. There you can have a nice view of Berlin.

Checkpoint Charlie

Berlin is full of history. And the place which is called Checkpoint Charlie is one of them. When Germany was separated as East and West, the Western Allies gave the name Checkpoint Charlie to that best known Berlin Wall crossing point during the Cold War. And it became the symbol of Cold War. Today it is more or just a tourist attraction.

There are still flags and the signs symbolizing those days.

Berlin Wall

The Berlin Wall was demolished but there are still remains around the city. And that was the part I liked most. Because the pictures on the walls are close to a work of art. Here are some of them...

Museum Island

Berlin is also a museum paradise. If you walk a few hundred meters from Alexanderplatz, you reach to the museum island.

In the museum island you can find the Old Museum, the New Museum, the Old National Gallery, the Bode Museum and also the famous Pergamon Museum. In the Pergamon Museum you can see also the famous Pergamon Altar and Athena Temple.

Berlin is very big city... For today I could just write about some parts only. The rest is coming soon....
