Bonn University |
Bonn is mostly known as the United Nation City while there are UN organizations in the city. The common denominator of the UN units in Bonn is "The UN in Bonn - for sustainable development worldwide". But the city is also known as the city of Beethoven. While he had lived in Bonn.
Beethoven House
Since Beethoven was a Bonner it is natural that there is a museum about him. Actually it was his home when he lived here. The entrance fee is 5 euros. For students it is 4 euros. You can see there some furniture and musical instruments of Beethoven. Or some photos and documents about him.
Beethoven House |
Each year there is also Beethoven festival in Bonn. This year it will be held from 9 September-9 October. For those Beethoven or classical music admirers it can be a good opportunity.
Museums
Bonn is a city that is rich in terms of museums...
Kunstmuseum (Art Museum)
Here you can see some exhibitions of modern artists. And the museum houses also the works of the painter August Macke and some other Rhenish expressionists. The entrance fee is 7 euros.
Zoological Museum
The exact name is "Alexander König Zoological Research Institute and Museum". In German it is "Museum König". When I visited there was an interesting exhibiton about animals.
Haus der Geschichte
That museum puts a light on the German history. It includes exhibitions related to German history from 1945 till today. The entrance is free. You can go there with the buses number 610-611 from the main bus station and get out in the Museum Mile (Museumsmeile) stop. Kunstmuseum is also at the same place.
Frauenmuseum (Women's museum)
In that musuem there are exhibitions of the women artists or photographers.
It is a "very" small musuem inside the Bonn University. But for mummies and pharaohs admirers can be a "small" opportunity to see.
Bonn University garden
When I wrote about university it reminded me the garden. It is a popular place especially in summer. The people sit, play football or volleyball or even make picnic when the sun shines -which is very rare in Germany-.
Rathaus
That is the old city hall in Bonn. During the week days in front of it there is an open market. There you can find fresh vegetables and fruits.
The old city hall |
Years ago the presidents Kennedy, Gorbatschow and De Gaulle had addressed to the public on the stairs of that building. You can go up the stairs and imagine what they were talking about those days:)

Churchs
As in German city there are many churchs and cathedrals in Bonn as well. That one is in the city center.
Botanical Garden
It is located in the district called Poppelsdorf. There are diffenrent types of flowers and trees. In summer it is nice too have a walk there.
Rhine River
Rhine River is also one of the symbols of Bonn. Actually not only of Bonn but of the whole region. In summer it is nice to have a walk there too... But unfortunately there are not so many cafes or restaurants by the river. Actually one can say "none".

Shopping
Sorry women! Unfortunately Bonn is not a shopping city. There are two shopping malls (Galeria and Karstadt) and some other cloth shops too. But one cannot compare it with other big cities like Berlin or Milano :)
It is more like a city for those who want to have a little bit piece, see the museums and try to get the old capital atmosphere... Ahhh and don't forget about Beethoven also...
Thank you for your candid and helpful review of the old capital of Bonn
